Catalogue Note
Gu Wenda often incorporates invented, nonsensical characters into his works to highlight the quality of abstraction shared by calligraphy and ink painting. Widely regarded as a pioneer of Chinese conceptual ink art, Gu's deliberately miswritten, deformed, or hybrid characters allude to the limitations of knowledge and the written word. These imaginative characters not only represent subversion but also the artist's exploration beyond the restrictive boundaries of language. This unique artistic vision is powerfully incorporated into his renowned Mythos of Lost Dynasties series (Lot 2828), which combines simplified characters typical of Maoist propaganda with those of ancient Chinese seal-scripts. Meanwhile, the power of the word is visually illustrated in Feng Shui (Lot 2827) where the word for landscape is depicted as a hybrid character arising from a monumental, monochromatic landscape.
