Catalogue Note
After graduating from China National Academy of Art in 1981, and studying calligraphy under master Lin Sanzhi (1898 -1989), Wang rapidly became one of China’s most renowned modernist calligraphers recognised for his works that embody performance and gestural abstraction. In the present work, the artist has written a poem inspired by a Buddhist text and spontaneously covered it in ink. His inscription to the left creates a visually striking tension between the calligraphy and dark ink form. The resulting image is a visual expression of Wang’s creative process and is a particularly sentimental work for the artist that he originally placed in his private studio.
