Catalogue Note

Natsunosuke Mise is a Japanese artist who expresses an intense inner struggle with his country's traditionalism and orthodoxy through his highly expressive and multifaceted works. Expertly trained in the classic nihonga style of painting, Natsunosuke has always been reticent to fully depart from its techniques. And yet he intensely questions the societal and educational foundations which underpin his traditional training. The artist's style is characterized by his primary use of sumi ink and pigments, combined with numerous media ranging from gold to copper, ink to acrylic, and collage.

The present lot My God is a prime example of the clashing forces which drive Natsunosuke's artistic process. The work pays tribute to symbols and motifs of religious folklore and clearly references the majestic traditions of classical painting. At the same time, these images are masked by an explosion of colour created with ink and mixed media on layers of paper. Forceful, thought-provoking and dynamic, Natsunoke's work exemplifies the strong technical and intellectual underpinnings that are driving innovation in the contemporary ink genre today.
