Condition

This work is in good condition overall. There are artist pinholes in all 4 corners, which have led to minor tears at the bottom corners. There is a slight undulation and creasing to the sheet, inherent to the artist's working method. There is a minor loss to the pigment at 2-inches from the top edge and 5-inches from the right edge, and another minor loss 5-inches from the top edge and 6-inches from the right edge. There are light drip accertions in the lower left quadrant, visible upon close inspection. There is very minor and fine hairline craquelure in the black area at the lower left corner, only visible upon very close inspection. Under close inspection, unobtrusive pinpoint spot and media accretions are visible. The sheet is hinged verso intermittently along the edges to the matte. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

"Diebenkorn has not returned to abstraction (as I see it) but has discovered it in a form that has little to do with abstraction as he knew it before or, for that matter, with most abstraction as it is served up to us today. He is an artist with a powerful command of expressive structure that he employs in paintings that are–almost incidentally–non-figurative." John Canaday, “Richard Diebenkorn: Still Out of Step," New York Times, May 26, 1968
