Condition
This work is in very good condition overall. The surface appears stable and the colors bright. There is light surface soiling and scattered craquelure evident. There is a 2 inch pigment loss at the top right edge as well as small pigment losses at the top left edge and in the lower left quadrant, approximately 2 inches from the left edge. Under Ultraviolet light inspection there is no evidence of restoration, however a roughly 2-inch box shape around the circular area of impasto at the center fluoresces darkly due to the artistÂ’s choice of medium and working method. Framed.

Catalogue Note
"To evoke radiance with paint was the main problem for the metaphysical painters of the New York School such as Newman, Gottlieb, Rothko, Reinhardt and Pollock. Like them, Pousette-Dart was never interested in abstracting from nature in the manner of Cubism. Painting was and remains for him a pure creation parallel to but not imitative of the natural world. In that sense, he belongs to the Transcendentalist strain in American art which springs from the mystery of Ryder's moonlit nocturnes, and continues in the abstract, cosmic imagery of Dove."
