Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The edges of the canvas are taped. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges particularly at the corners and a 1-inch vertical abrasion in the lower right corner. There are several artist’s pinholes scattered along the edges and in each corner, which may resulted in the small loss at the lower left corner, which has lifted slightly. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. Under very close inspection, a few scattered media accretions are visible and there is a ½-inch horizontal brown spot accretion in the upper left quadrant. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"Let us seek instead ingenious ways to flatten objects on the surface; and let the surface speak its own language and not an artificial language of three-dimensional space which is not proper to it...I feel the need to leave the surface visibly flat. The objects represented will be transformed into pancakes, as though flattened by a pressing iron."

Jean Dubuffet
