Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The lateral and bottom edges of the sheet are deckled. There is a slight undulation to the sheet, inherent to the artist’s working method. The sheet has yellowed slightly and the colors have faded slightly with age. Under very close inspection there is a minor ¼-inch tear approximately 6-inches from the top of the left edge. The sheet is hinged verso intermittently along the top edge to the matte. Framed under Plexiglas.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

"The painting of Sam Francis imposes…no prior definition on us and thus runs no risk of deceiving us. It is by turns a solution composed of clouds swallowing a very pure nectar, the soft and veiled effervescence of a spring decanted through a filer of honey-colored sand, a snowy sherbet saturated with pink blood…It is less and yet more than that, it is everything and nothing, it is the fullness of the void.”
