Catalogue Note
This piece dates from just after Tiffany & Co. won the Gold Medal at the 1878 Paris Exhibition with their mixed-metal Japanese-style silver. This had an immediate influence on makers in France, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Here, Elkington & Co. have had to use applied coppering, like gilding, as guild regulations would not allow the applied copper castings used by Tiffany.
