Description

  • Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • German or Austrian, early 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the wood figures is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age, including dust in the crevices. There is wear and some losses to the gilding and polychromy, in particular to St Barbara's proper right hand, her crown, the front of her dress, and the back of St Catherine. There is craquelure throughout, which is particularly visible on St Catherine. A split in the wood runs vertically across St Catherine's back. There is a hole to the back of St Barbara, another hole to the top of her head, and a smaller hole to the top of St Catherine's head. Each figure bears a sticker on the reverse numbered: 1280. The base of St Catherine is padded with two pieces of felt.
