Description
- Wolfgang Heimbach
- Portrait of an elderly nobleman, half-length, standing beside a table draped in red, wearing a black cloak, a medal around his neck, and holding a pair of gloves
- charged upper left with the coat-of-arms of the Eitzen family of Hamburg, and below that inscribed: AETATI SUAE. / 60
- oil on copper
- 14 x 10 cm; ca. 80 x 70cm
oil on panel; together with a portrait of a young girl with a dog, Flemish School, bearing a date 1628, oil on panel (we believe this work to be a pastiche; the face is based on Rubens’ portrait of his daughter in the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna, possibly a 17th century panel heavily repainted in later times)
Condition
The copperplate is remains overall in good condition, with only small knocks to the corners.
The paint surface is dirty and covered by a yellow varnish. There is some wear in the gold adornments to his costume, to black garments (resulting in some loss of modelling), and to the inscription.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a very thick varnish, which makes it impossible to see retouchings beneath. However, with the naked eye it is possible to detect retouchings to small losses in the background, and around the edges.
This lot is offered in a black ebonised Dutch style frame, in good condition.
