Condition
Very good condition overall with some minor surface dirt consistent with age and handling. Hercules' proper right arm and the handle of the club appear to have been reattached with a few minor chips at the joints visible.

Catalogue Note
Au cours de sa carrière, Delvaux a traité à plusieurs reprises le sujet d'Hercule. On peut observer des analogies stylistiques dans la composition du marbre d'Hercule au repos, réalisé par Delvaux vers 1755 lors de son séjour à Rome (Bruxelles, musée des Beaux Arts, inv. 6296), dont l'esquisse en terre cuite est conservée dans une collection privée. Vers 1768-1770, Delvaux réalisa un marbre, grandeur nature d'Hercule debout pour Charles de Lorraine (musée des Beaux Arts de Bruxelles; inv. 9830). Une réduction en terre cuite du Victoria & Albert Museum, Londres (inv.A56-1930), et une autre version au musée de Bruxelles (inv.9416) montrent une attitude du corps aux muscles prononcés, le geste des mains s'appuyant sur la massue, et un modelé des traits du visage et de la chevelure très similaires à notre terre cuite.
