Catalogue Note

The sitter was born in Florence the thirteenth child of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain. During the Napoleonic wars he commanded the Austrian Army and afterwards devoted much time to mountaineering, hunting and collecting minerals in the Alps. In 1829, he married, during a nocturnal ceremony, Anna Plochlde (1804-1885), the daughter of Jakob Plochl, postmaster of Aussee. By this morganatic marriage, the Archduke was excluded from succession to the throne.
