Condition
Bon état général. Quelques traces de moisisure sur la vitre qui n'ont pas affecté la surface de la peinture. Quelques très légères traces marrons dans le fond. Présence éventuelle de très légères retouches dans le fond en haut à gauche. Tout à fait en bas, le frottement de la vitre a peut-être enlevé quelques traces de pigments.

Le modèle représenté naquit en 1776 à Florence, il était le septième fils de Léopold II, l’empereur du Saint Empire romain et de Marie-Louise d’Espagne. En 1796, il fut nommé palatin de Hongrie et trois ans plus tard, il se rendit à Saint Pétersbourg où il épousa la grande duchesse Alexandra Pavlovna de Russie (1783-1801). Malheureusement, elle mourut en 1801 peu de temps après une fausse couche qui lui aurait donné une fille. La seconde épouse de Joseph fut la princesse Hermine d'Anhalt-Bernbourg-Shaumbourg (1797-1817), qu’il avait épousée en août 1815 au château de Schaumburg. Cette dernière mourut également tragiquement en couche en 1817 et deux ans plus tard, Joseph épousa la duchesse Marie Dorothée de Württemberg. Ensemble, ils eurent cinq enfants.

In 1796, he was appointed Palatine of Hungary and three years later, he travelled to Saint Petersburg to marry the Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia (1783-1801). Sadly, she died in 1801, soon after delivering a stillborn daughter. Joseph second wife was Princess Hermine of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym (1797-1817), whom he married in August 1815 at Schaumburg Castle. Tragically she too died in childbirth in 1817 and two years later he married Duchess Maria Dorothea of Württemberg. The couple had five children between them.
