Catalogue Note
The sitter was the third son of Emperor Leopold II and his wife, Infanta Maria-Luisa of Spain. Despite suffering from epilepsy, by 1796, he was chief of all Austrian forces on the Rhine. He master-minded a succession of important victories against the French, including at Amber, Würzburg, Zürich, Ostrach, Stockach, and Messkirch. He was finally defeated at the Battle of Wagram, but despite this, he remains one of the great military figures of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1815 he married Henrietta Wilhelmine of Nassau-Weilburg.
