Catalogue Note

Prince Ferdinand d'Orléans was the eldest son of King Louis Philippe, King of the French and his wife Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies. Born in exile in his mother's native Sicily, he first visited France in 1814. Following his father's succession as King of the French in 1830, he became the Prince Royal and subsequently Dud d'Orléans. In 1837 he married, at Fontainebleau, Duchess Helene of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1814-1858) and the couple had two children. In 1842, the Prince died, suddenly, in a horse-drawn carriage accident, he therefore never saw the collapse of the July Monarchy or subsequent exile of his family to England.
