Le Trésor de l'Abbaye royale de Saint-Denis en France publié en 1736 par Pierre de Bats mentionne, conservé parmi d'autres reliques provenant de Louis IX : "un grand cristal de roche où est gravé un crucifix avec les images de la Sainte Vierge et de Saint Jean, en haut duquel il y a des vêtements royaux de Saint Louis. Ce cristal est dans une enchâssure d'or, ornée de pierres précieuses".
En août 1793, le vandalisme révolutionnaire n'épargna pas davantage les reliquaires de la basilique que les tombeaux royaux, qui furent systématiquement profanés. Le CHU d'Angers conserve un autre fragment du manteau de Saint Louis, enchâssé dans un reliquaire du XIXe siècle.
