Description
- zitan
each with soft-mat seat set in a square framed top above a straight waist and simple beaded apron, the square section legs terminating in hoof feet and supported by brackets
Provenance
Purchased from Hei Hung-Lu, Hong Kong, late 1980s/early 1990s.
Condition
The pair of stools are in good condition with the exception of replaced hard matt seats, possibly replaced trimming strips and minor wear commensurate with age.

Square stools with geometric spandrels are more commonly known modelled without the horse-hoofed feet, as seen on a set of four stools of this type, where the spandrels support a thin apron, from the collections of C.P. Fitzgerald and Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, published in Chinese Furniture. Hardwood Examples of the Ming and Qing Dynasty, New York, 1971, pl. 111, and sold at Christie’s New York, 18th March 2015, lot 134; and another stool sold in our New York rooms, 9th/10th October 1987, lot 447.
