  • lacquer
of large rectangular form, the flat upper surface carved with a scholar sitting on a grassy patch beneath a pine tree gazing at a waterfall, two attendants nearby, one brewing tea, the other further away walking toward them, the landscape laden with jagged cliffs and rockwork, all against a diapered ground, the straight sides deftly carved through the rich cinnabar with flowering peony, the box similarly carved, the interior and base lacquered black (2)

Condition

The base of the box with restoration along the edge of the foot, and to three of the four corners as well as touch ups to small areas along the carved sides. The interior with lifting lacquer and restoration to the inner rim and corners. The cover with with age appropriate wear and minor restoration to small areas of flaking or loss; the interior with two lines of vertical lifting and restoration around the rim.
