Catalogue Note
At the beginning of the sixties, in an international context of research, Bonalumi's work is characterized by an innovative elaboration of works rigorously self-representative, monochrome, where the classic 2-D canvas opens itself to the possibilities of 3-D, through free configurations of an essentially modular and geometric matrix. These works, defined by Bonalumi as "Extroflections", whose title is simply the color used to create them, are true "painting objects", composed by elasticized canvas, tightened on special looms structured with jutting elements that determine the embossed shapes of the composition. It is a method that allows the artist to modulate surfaces in volumetric terms, with a refined and elaborate procedure of introflections and extroflections, creating a particular spatial dimension caused by the changeable impact of the external light.
