The canvas has been lined. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure visible throughout the composition, and some minor rubbing along the painted oval, covered by the frame. Catalogue Note

Prince Karl Theodor of Bavaria (1795-1875) was the second son of Maximilian I (1756 – 1825), King of Bavaria, and brother of Ludwig I (1786 - 1868). The present work belongs to a series of four portraits of the Prince, circa 1816 - 1817 and is reminiscent of Stieler’s first portrait of the Prince, Carl Prinz con Bayern on a horse, started in 1812 and finished in 1817 (U. von Hase,Joseph Stieler 1781-1858. Sein Leben und sein Werk. Kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke, Munich 1971, p. 125, no. 66- 69). Portrayed here in his green riding cape, Prince Karl Theodor had an attractive personality which had always caught Stieler’s attention. He chose a military career and lost his right to the throne when he decided to marry a commoner, Maria-Anna-Sophie Petin.
