Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are small areas of paint rubbing along the edges of the inner painted oval, mostly covered by the framed. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure throughout the entire painted surface which seems stable. Ultra-violet light reveals signs of cosmetic retouching along the aforementioned craquelure, notably in the sitter's red cape and very few signs in the neck and face. Other scattered spots of retouching are visible outside the framed oval. The painting is in otherwise good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with a nameplate and an inner oval frame.

Catalogue Note

Therese Alexandra von Tettenborn was the wife of Friedrich von Tettenborn (1778-1840) who played an important role in the Napoleonic Wars and freed Hamburg from the French troops in 1813. Therese is portrayed in a beautiful red shawl and matching turban which must have certainly been a statement of elegance and social ranking within the aristocracy of the time. Upon the death of her husband, Therese von Tettenborn decided to donate his portrait - also painted by Stieler in 1815 - to the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
