Condition

The canvas has been strip-lined. There are no signs of damage or restoration visible to the naked eye. Under ultra-violet light the picture fluoresces quite unevenly due to old residual varnish, and some scattered spots of retouching are visible notably to the left framing edge and in the sitter's gown. The work is in otherwise good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Initially taught by his father, the court painter at Hannover, Friederich (Fritz)von Kaulbach soon became a renowned portrait and genre painter. This painting is of his sister-in-law Johanna Lahmeyer.
