Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is some very minor hairline craquelure on the painting surface, notably in the sky and some light frame rubbing at the extreme edges. Ultra-violet light reveals some uneven fluorescence which likely relates to strengthening in the sky and in the foliage of the dark green tree in the middle of the composition. The picture is in otherwise good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Károly Markó moved to Antella near Florence in 1847 and took up residence in the Villa Lappeggi which once belonged to the Medici family. Most of his paintings from this period are signed C. Marko. S. p. Ap. (for Appeggi, probably a place name in the locality).
