Description
- François Boucher
- A wooded landscape with an angler and countryfolk by a tower
- oil on canvas, in blue monochrome
- 88 cm by 150 cm
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining that has not overly flattened the paint surface. The surface is stable, and the varnish clear and even. In overall fair and stable condition, with intact original impasto in the foliage and figures. Visible to the naked eye is a line of restoration 1 inch wide that runs vertically from the top margin down the right side of the building at the left of the composition, and ends in the steps that lead to the waters edge. The retouchings along this line have very slightly discoloured and have a greenish hue. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforementioned restoration and reveals another small patch of repair in the tree tops at the centre left and other smaller scattered restorations, retouchings and strengthenings throughout.
