Description

  • fender 47cm high, 198cm wide, 25cm deep; 1ft. 6½in., 6ft. 6in., 9¾in. fireguard: 76cm. high, 92cm. wide; 2ft. 5¾in., 3ft. ¼in.
centred by an urn flanked by female sphinxes suspending berried laurel swags with a bird at each end and scrolling foliage, together with a fireguard in the form of a stylised fan with a mask (unillustrated)

Provenance

The 6th Earl of Rosebery, Sotheby's Mentmore sale, Buckinghamshire, 18th-20th May 1977, lot 1207, for the fender.

Condition

Fender: In overall good original condition. The piece is slightly dirty and would benefit from a clean according to taste The projecting wing on the swan on the left side is missing and can easily be restored or left as it is. Fireguard: The piece is dirty and would benefit from a clean. Some of the fan shaped sections are slightly bent.
