Description

  • Relief with Dionysus visiting the house of a mortal
  • partially polychromed plaster
  • Attributed to Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921) German, late 19th century After the Antique

Condition

Overall the condition of the relief is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a layer of dirt to the surface throughout. There are a few losses to the edge, including one to the right edge and another to the bottom edge in the area beneath the column. A few pieces in these areas of loss are loose. There are also a few minor chips to the edges and corners. There are a few stable hairline fissures to the plaster, consistent with the material. There appears to be some surface wear to the figures. There is a possibly original loss to the proper right arm of the naked male figure on the right side, and a probably original loss to the head of the figure at the far right side.

Catalogue Note

The well-known Graeco-Roman Dionysos-Ikarios relief exists in several versions, including at the British Museum (inv. no. 1805,0703.123) and the Archaeological Museum in Naples. A terracotta copy of the relief which has by repute been associated with the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand is embedded into one of the walls of the Lenbach Villa in Munich, along with three original compositions by the artist in terracotta. Hildebrand was active in Naples in the 1870s, where he could have seen the Dionysus relief. Its Munich provenance at the Palais Bernheimer suggests that the present plaster may be associated with the relief in the Lenbach Villa.
