Description

  • Bust of a woman
  • marble, on a limestone base
  • North Italian, 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is good, with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is weathering and dirt to the surface throughout, consistent with placement outdoors. There are a few slightly open fissures to the marble, notably: one running vertically across the proper left side of the head, partially filled on the cheek and forehead; and another running from the drapery at the front at the bottom to the underside. There are three metal brackets to the underside, probably to stabilise such fissures. There are several chips and abrasions to the marble, notably to the tip of the nose; a larger chip to the edge of the drapery at the proper left shoulder, and further abrasions to the high points of the drapery. There is a hole to the underside. Dirt marks include several splashes of white paint. There is dirt and wear to the limestone socle. There are a few losses, notably to one of the top corners and another section at the top. There is an open split running through the centre of the socle, which appears to be held in place by an old metal bracket which is visile at the top. On one side of the socle there are two open splits due to the split at the centre, leading to a section being slightly loose. There are numerous chips and abrasions, in particular to the edges. There are a few encrusted dirt marks. A piece of string, which would have held a label, is tied around the base.
