Description
- Font with a dolphin
- monogrammed: IAM
- alabaster
- North Italian, 16th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the alabaster is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The font is composed of three sections; the base, the shaft, and the basin. The surface has slightly weathered. There is veining to the alabaster throughout, consistent with the material. There are a few holes and some metal pins to the top of the basin. The stone is worn this area, consistent with use. There are a few losses to the ornamental band around the basin, and there are chips and abrasions to the shaft, including to the ornament. There are also a few chips and scratches to the dolphin, and to the edges and corners of each section. A section at the dolphin's neck is carved separately, and some glue residue is visible around the joint.
