Description

  • Pair of pedestals
  • mottled red and grey-green marble, veneered around a gesso core
  • Italian, early 18th century
each with a label inscribed: #6493 / 2 Podeste

Condition

Overall the condition of the pedestals is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is dust throughout. The tops of the pedestals are carved separately and are currently detached. The marble is applied to the plaster shafts in veneer, and stable joints are visible in several places. The red marble veneer on one edge of one of the pedestals has been reattached in several pieces and some restoration is slightly visible. There is a loss to the red marble veneer at the base of the same pedestal at the corner below the previously mentioned section. A section at the base of the other pedestal appears to have been reattached, with an open but stable joint. There are several chips and abrasions to the edges and corners throughout, and in particular to the bottom corners of one of the pedestals. There is veining to the marble throughout, consistent with the material, and some open veins or possible losses have been restored. There are several scratches to the marble, in particular to the tops.
