Catalogue Note
This present work was formerly in the collection of Wai-kam Ho, who is recognised as one of the most important Asian art historians of the 20th century. Guiding the curation at the Cleveland Museum of Art alongside Sherman E. Lee, and later at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Professor Ho is essential to the promotion and continued interest in the West on Buddhist texts, Chinese literature, calligraphy and paintings. His publications on Chinese art form the foundation for scholarship in the field. In 1967, Liu Guosong was invited by the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art to hold a solo exhibition. For Liu Guosong, the year also marked the end of a two year world-travel grant awarded from the John D. Rockefeller III Foundation in 1966; it was an invaluable opportunity that enhanced the worldly vision for this indisputable painting master.
