Catalogue Note
He Xi, born in Beijing in 1960, earned successive degrees from Shanghai Arts & Crafts College and China Academy of Art. He is presently the Director of Creative Research at Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy.
He Xi usually adopts a passive attitude towards how people interpret his artwork, and he is seldom willing to explain his intentions. His visually and psychologically shocking works, such as the massive painting Tragedy of the Fox as well as his Bound, Second-hand Plants, Popular Plants, and Marine Life series, contain penetrating, unsettling contradictions: freedom versus fetters, man versus nature. These works are shaped by He Xi's other extraordinary abilities: mature ink wash technique and superb skill in realism.
