Catalogue Note
Yuan Yuan’s pieces are always imbued with a sense of nostalgia, revealing an inexplicable sense of both poignancy and loss. Both meticulous and ever-changing, the artist’s brushwork is almost undetectable from afar, creating stunningly realistic works; yet, upon close inspection, sensual, emotional strokes reveal themselves to the naked eye. Yuan Yuan enjoys treating interior spaces as the thematic concerns of his oeuvre, and these range from the magnificent to the derelict. Using space as a reflection of the viewer’s psychological state, his works emit a surreal visual sensory experience. Flow III is one such unique work, and depicts the interior of a church. At first glance the stained glass window seems to provide a view of a clear blue sky, but this is rather an abyss of cerulean ocean, creating the sense that the church itself is immersed in the sea—a thought-provoking metaphor in its own right.
Yuan Yuan is from Hangzhou, and graduated from the China Academy of Art with a Master’s degree in 2008, and is an artist who has received considerable attention in recent years.
