Catalogue Note

Jiang Ji'an was born in Yantai, Shandong province, in 1967. In 1987 he graduated from the fine arts department of Shandong Normal University with a major in traditional Chinese painting. In 1992, he earned a master's degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He presently resides in Beijing.

Jiang Ji'an came to prominence in the Chinese contemporary art scene with the creation of his Two Rooms series in 2007-2009. The unforgettable installation used light and shadow to transform an ordinary apartment interior into a scene of reality mixed with illusion. These interiors paintings are the extension of Jiang's earlier practice of gongbi painting on silk, in which he often uses realistic depictions of objects with mixed media to express his distinctive artistic ideas.

Scroll is part of Jiang's ready-made painting series, and he considers this present work as a self-portrait of a hanging silk scroll. The white silk provides both parts of the medium: the canvas and the paint. The artist has devised his own method of charring the silk to produce a kind of pigment. In addition, the silk is the content of the painting as both an image of a hanging silk scroll and two sculpted sticks formed from the residue of the charred pigment process. Thus white silk is used throughout Jiang's painting process, completing a self-enclosed cycle. By rearranging the conventional relationships between canvas, paint, and image, the artist constructs a painting with a unique methodology and appearance. Scroll itself depicts the traditional form of Chinese ink wash painting; in its creation, Jiang Ji'an utilises his own highly contemporary sensibility to engage tradition in dialogue with the present.
