Description

  • Silver
the elongated rectangular case with swollen terminals and a double-hinged well, the terminals and edges and base of well with incised floral decoration and traces of gilt, stamped with tughras and a maker's mark 'amal Mehmed'

Condition

In good condition, some scratches and light scuffs to surface, traces of gilding, as viewed.

Stamped 'Work of Mehmed'

With the tughra of Mahmud I (r.1730-54)

Another divit bearing a stamp by Mehmed, also with the tughra of Sultan Mahmud I, is in the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Istanbul (TiEM 3360, illustrated in Kürkman 1996 p.75). It also features a six-pointed star engraved to the inside of the lid of the inkwell, known as 'Solomon's seal', surrounded by the names of the Seven Sleepers (ibid.) A further example is illustrated in M.Ş. Acar, Osmanli'da Günlük Yaşam Nesneleri, Haziran, 2011, p.117.
