Description

  • brass
  • 19.5cm. height.
  • 44cm. diam.
of deep cylindrical form with wide flared rim, interior rim with wide band of thuluth calligraphy separated by foliate roundels, surmounting a thinner band of animals in chase, exterior body decorated with four oblong inscriptive cartouches interspersed with arabesque medallions, base later replacement

Condition

In fair overall condition, silver-inlay lacking, base replaced, minor split to lower edge, interior decoration rubbed, old repairs to rim, few knocks, as viewed.

Interior: 'His Noble High Excellency the Lord, possessing Knowledge, he who practises Justice, soldier of the Faith who menaces enemy frontiers, defender of those in need of God, the Foreseer, the Defender, the Hero, Malik al-Salih' 

Exterior: 'His Noble High Excellency the Lord, possessor, the grand Emir, with knowledge, he who practises Justice, soldier of the Faith who menaces enemy frontiers, defender of the steps, the Foreseer, the Defender of Integrity, the Incomparable...'

An almost identical basin is illustrated in G. Janneau, Henry René d'Allemagne: La maison d'un vieux collectionneur, 1948, no.176. It is noted in the Institut du Monde Arabe catalogue that such basins were illustrated in some treatises on medicine and pharmacopoeia as "... containers for filtered liquid preparations before they were transferred to jars" (Paris 2012, p.276, no.245).
