A fine Pilkington's Lancastrian large charger, dated 1918

designed by Walter Crane and painted by William S.Mycock, painted in blue, green, gold and red lustre with St.George in full armour mounted on a rearing horse holding a lance, piercing the head of a ferocious dragon which encircles the border, the cavetto inscribed, `UN CHEVALIER SANS PEUR ET SANS REPROCHE', against a vibrant blue lustre ground, the reverse with a gilt leafy border on a deep green ground, impressed factory mark P above VII and 2477, designer and painter's rebus mark and the date 1918,

Given as a wedding present in 1920 to the Aunt of the present owner;
Thence by family descent

Several versions of this design were made in differing colour palettes. Apart from this charger painted by William S.Mycock , other versions recorded have been painted by Richard Joyce and Gordon Forsyth, the two other leading artists at  the factory. The earliest example appears to be the 1907 example by Joyce painted in red and gold on a green ground and illustrated in The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art, 1908, no.B.197. Another example in a slightly different palette from the Harriman Judd Collection, painted again by Richard Joyce with the same date as the present charger,  was sold by Sotheby's , New York, 22nd January, 2001, lot 413. and is illustrated by A.J.Cross, Plikington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery and Tiles, London,1980, front cover. Another version, painted by Gordon Forsyth was sold in the same rooms, 8th October, 2004, lot 11.
