Catalogue Note
The marks of William Frisbee and his contemporary, William Fountain, have often been confused, particularly those entered respectively on 23 June 1798 (Grimwade, no. 3120) and 1 September 1794 (Grimwade, no. 3122), both of which are the initials WF in conjoined circles. The angular maker's mark on this cup and cover, however, is unmistakably that of Frisbee (Grimwade, no. 3121). This same mark, struck on a set of four wine coolers, London, 1802, was attributed to Fountain in Christie's sale of 20 February 1947, lot 144. These coolers, with swans' head handles and engraved with the arms of William, Viscount Lowther, afterwards 1st Earl of Lonsdale, were also applied with bacchanalian figures, one of which is identical to one of those applied to the body of the present cup.
