Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Some loss to the upper part of the headdess and to the neck. Stabilized open crack to the proper left shoulder and upper part of the arm. Another small one to the back.

Catalogue Note
Cette statue s'inscrit dans le prestigieux corpus d’œuvres dont l'individualité stylistique fut identifiée en 1994 par Susan Vogel sous le nom "d'atelier de Nzipi" et que Bernard de Grunne rebaptisa, en 2001, lors de l'exposition Mains de Maîtres, "Atelier des Maîtres de Sakassou".
Selon Bernard de Grunne (Mains de Maîtres, 2001, p. 69), "au cours du XVIIIe siècle, Sakassou fut un centre politique et artistique très important pour la culture Baulé, à la suite de l'arrivée des Akan-Baulé. La chefferie la plus importante qu'ils instaurèrent était à Sakassou. Cette cour royale a probablement dû stimuler la création d'ateliers de grands sculpteurs de statues pour asseoir sa légitimité sur les populations locales proto-Baulé, utilisant donc l'élément religieux et culturel purement autochtone qu'était la vénération des époux de l'au-delà par des statues". A l'élégance caractéristique du style de l'Atelier des Maîtres de Sakassou s'ajoute ici la remarquable interprétation des détails anatomiques, notamment des doigts.
