Cette statue relève d'un des corpus les plus emblématiques de l'ancienne statuaire Dogon. Identifié par Hélène Leloup comme "Djennenké", ce style est issu des migrations parties de Djenné lors de la conversion de la ville à l'Islam, vers le XIe siècle : "ceux qui refusèrent de se convertir furent chassés de la ville et s'installèrent progressivement dans l'Ouest du Plateau de Bandiagara. Ils y formèrent plusieurs groupes et développèrent, entre le XIe et le XVe siècle, l'art dit Djennenké" (Leloup, Statuaire Dogon, 1994, p. 119-136).
Tandis que leur iconographie se caractérise en particulier par les scarifications en motifs quadrillés gravés sur les tempes et souvent par le port d'un pagne échancré - soit long, comme ici, soir court pour les cavaliers - plusieurs d'entre elles adoptent une même gestuelle. Les deux bras, ou parfois seulement le bras gauche, accompagnent avec souplesse le mouvement du buste et s'étirent jusqu'à la cuisse sur laquelle la main vient reposer (cf. Sotheby's, Paris, 8 juin 2007, n° 240; et New York, 11 novembre 2014, n° 5). La profonde patine sombre, partiellement huileuse, de même que les nombreux prélèvements sur le nez et la bouche, témoignent de la permanence des rituels dont cette statue a fait l'objet, sur plusieurs générations.
