Description

  • Approximately 2 ft. by 2 ft. 10 1/2 in.
The parade flag printed on cotton muslin; the camp-dyed stars, of three different sizes, configured into the "Great Star" or "Great Luminary" pattern.  There is a hand-sewn cotton muslin sleeve, and the fly end has a hand-sewn hem.  It is striking that the dying procedure was crudely done, leaving most of the stars blue-tipped.  In addition, there is color overlap on each of the upper four red stripes.

The American Flag Collection of Thomas S. Connelly, Sotheby's, May 23, 2002, sale 7801, lot 117.

With a tear at proper right edge, and several areas of staining and oxidation at hoist edge; with three patches in white stripes that are second, third, and fourth from top; with some staining and discoloration throughout, as shown in the catalogue.
