Catalogue Note

A full length portrait of a young boy with his dog and holding a riding crop.  His hat is off and at his feet and he is dressed in a red and black plaid outfit with white pantaloons.  The dress is festooned with red ribbons at the shoulders and belted at the waist with a black belt and silver buckle.

The execution of this portrait is done in Phillips' singular abbreviated style.  Probably painted in New York State.  It is unusual to find full length portraits of children with their animals, but there is a small choice subset of his work with these depictions.
