Catalogue Note

The Reverend Doctor John Lambert Richmond is well known as an obstetrician and an author in the medical field.  The Richmond genealogy states that he was the son of Nathaniel and Susannah [Lambert] Richmond, both of whom were born in Taunton, Massachusetts.  After Nathaniel Richmond served in the Revolution, he was discharged by Washington in 1783 from the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment.  in the same year he married and settled in Chesterfield, Massachusetts where John Lambert Richmond was born in 1785.  In 1787–88 the family moved to New York state, settling in Herkimer, New York in 1795.

John Lambert Richmond, who did not have the advantages of a systematic education, was largely self-taught, including the classical languages.  In 1806 he married Lorana Sprague Putchin, moved to Onondaga [Syracuse], New York, and ten years later he was ordained a Baptist minister in nearby Camillus, New York.

During a service at the church on April 22, 1827 he was called to perform the operation for which he is best remembered.  In the next few hours he performed the first professional cesarean section in the United States.

A pair of portraits by the same artist of a little boy and girl in identical yellow-painted frames were sold at Christie's, sale 2659, January 23, 2012, lot 198, originally found in Ohio, and sold to Bernard Barenholtz.
