Catalogue Note

The title of the present work appears to be a reference to Sir Isaac Newton's discovery of the force of gravity.  According to popular legend, Newton first realized the basic tenets of his theory while watching apples fall from a tree.  Similarly, in The Little Philosopher, Hassam playfully depicts a young girl in deep contemplation, leaning against an apple tree with a fruit in her hand, apples scattered at her feet and above her head.
