Condition
Condition Report from Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. (4/20/2015): This painting is in remarkably good condition. It has not been noticeably damaged. However, its last cleaning was very uneven, as can be seen in the upper sky on the right and around the tallest palm tree on the right. The cleaning needs to be more effectively handled. There is also a significantly yellowed varnish still remaining on the surface. There are a couple of small actual damages in the upper right, but it is remarkable for a work of this scale and period to be so undamaged.

Catalogue Note
Born in Rochester, New York, Bush is best known for his landscapes of South and Central America and the west coast of the United States. Among his mentors were Jasper Francis Cropsey and Frederick Edwin Church, the latter's influence being very much in evidence in the present painting. Bush was exposed to the jungles of Central America during his first voyages to California in the early 1850s, when he sailed around Cape Horn and through the Isthmus of Panama and was inspired by the jungles of Nicaragua. His exotic, lush, tropical landscapes attracted the attention of several prominent San Francisco businessmen, who commissioned him over the years to go back and paint works relating to their business concerns in Central America and the Andes Mountains.
