Catalogue Note
Bierstadt’s majestic landscapes of America’s western wildernesses were among the first visions of that part of the country to be seen by the American public. Impressive Mount Rainier, an active volcano over 14,400 feet high and the tallest peak in Washington State and the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, suited him perfectly as a subject. He travelled to the region several times in the 1880s and while there produced numerous drawings and oil sketches of the mountain, among them the present work.
