Catalogue Note

In 1940, the artist was commissioned by The Pennsylvania State University to paint a series of frescoes for the upper walls of the Old Main building. The theme was a tribute to the establishment of the university and land grant education in general.  In 1948, Poor was re-engaged to add additional frescoes to the sides of the original commission with scenes symbolizing Penn State's post-war academic interests and services to the state.  The present work is a study for these later additions.
