Catalogue Note

Theodore Wolff refers to the present still-life as one of the most elegant of Graves' later career and notes that it "demonstrates how an artist of experience and sensibility can orchestrate a sizable number of floral and still-life objects to produce a work that not only breathes new life into an old compositional device but also comes across as simply and unpretentiously as any of his first, tentative attempts in this genre." (Wolff, op. cit., n.p.)
