Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is in beautiful condition. It is in original condition in many respects; it is on its original stretcher and in its original frame. The paint layer is quite noticeably dirty, but the exacting details throughout the landscape and trees are clearly visible and in perfect condition. As one sees quite often in American landscapes from this period, the sizing on the original canvas has slightly stained some of the colors in the sky, particularly the blue patches on the left and right. This cannot be completely removed without retouching. The canvas has relaxed slightly on the stretcher, and some cracking and stretcher bar marks are slightly visible. There is a small dent to the canvas above the tallest tree in the center in the sky. The paint layer is slightly bumpy beneath the cows in the distance in the center left, and this is directly related to the original painted inscription on the reverse of the canvas. One has to emphasize that the condition here is remarkably good.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
