Catalogue Note
The present work was a gift from the artist to fellow art critic and intellectual, Lawrence Campbell. Campbell was closely associated with the Art Students League of New York where he began his studies in 1946 along with well-known artists, Vaclav Vytlacil and Will Barnet. He retained an office at the league and became its resident intellectual and historian. Aside from his contributions to the Art Students League, Campbell was a prominent art critic who wrote hundreds of articles for Art News, Art in America and many other important art historical publications. An educator as well, Campbell taught for many years at Brooklyn College and Pratt Institute.
