The front doors with a beautifully figured palmwood veneer that presents with a few surface scratches and some scattered sensitively undertaken restoration, visible in the detail p. 56 of the catalogue and consistent with the delicacy of the material. The metal surfaces with minor surface scratches, minor discoloration and minor evidences of oxidation, concentrated to the lower base. The glass top with a few minor surface scratches consistent with use and gentle age. The cabinet opens to reveal two divided compartments each fitted with two shelves. A sculptural piece that beautifully combines the intricate wood selections nd modernity of the glass and metal. The result is a masterwork by the artist. ---

Catalogue Note

This lot has been authenticated by the legal successors of Paul Dupré-Lafon.

As Cubism and Constructivism brought new horizons for artists of the time, Dupré-Lafon followed Pierre Chareau and Francis Jourdain and developed his own pure, modern aesthetic. In the present lot, the highly stylized and abstracted presentation of the wood contrasts with the opaline glass top and chromium-plated metal lock.  Every detail serves the overall harmony: colors, materials, architectural contours and geometric forms relate to each other to convey elegance and modernity. The circularity of the lock contributes to the structure and harmony of the piece while the mechanism serves a precise function.  In this sideboard, each element was carefully considered and selected, striking an ideal balance between functionalism and traditionalism and resulting in a masterpiece.
